Home for the Holidays at Ford House returns this season with an expanded schedule, a new walking route, live carolers, and festive experiences that capture the spirit of the season with warmth and sophistication. The beloved tradition runs Thursdays through Sundays, December 4–21, with a special Friends of Ford House and Media Preview Night on Saturday, November 29, and a public opening on Sunday, November 30.

The evening offers families a chance to slow down together, reconnect, and experience the simple joys of the season surrounded by beauty, history, and tradition. With limited ticket capacity and timed entry, each evening feels calm and unhurried, allowing guests to fully savor the atmosphere without crowds. Many guests make Home for the Holidays a cherished annual tradition, returning year after year to experience the magic of the season at Ford House.

Families walk toward the warmly lit Main Residence at Home for the Holidays at Ford House, surrounded by trees and evergreens wrapped in golden holiday lights.
Guests stroll toward the beautifully illuminated Main Residence, where lights and timeless architecture welcome visitors to Home for the Holidays at Ford House.

Your Journey

Guests begin their evening by walking from the Visitor Center to Jingle Junction at Josephine’s Playhouse, with whimsical gingerbread figures and colorful lights that make for a delightful photo opportunity. From there, the walk transforms into a serene experience of soft white lights and uplifting instrumental holiday music as guests continue through the Formal and Rose Gardens, past the Pool and Lagoon, and toward the Main Residence.

The Ford House dining room set for the holidays, featuring gold candlesticks, lace table linens, and a Christmas tree.
Inside the Main Residence, the dining room showcases an elegant holiday setting that captures Ford House’s warm, sophisticated spirit.

For many guests, entering the Main Residence is the highlight of the evening, a chance to step inside one of Michigan’s most beautiful historic homes, warmly decorated in Eleanor Ford’s signature style of understated elegance. Inspired by her personal taste and sense of refinement, the décor embodies a gentle, sophisticated celebration of the season. Each room reflects beauty through simplicity, creating an atmosphere that is festive, graceful, and timeless.

“Eleanor Ford’s style reflected a quiet kind of elegance and beauty. Her approach to design was rooted in simplicity and intention, and that spirit continues in Home for the Holidays. We want guests to slow down, take in the atmosphere, and enjoy the season through her timeless sense of style.”

For Ford House leadership, Home for the Holidays reflects not only the joy of the season but also Eleanor Ford’s enduring legacy of generosity and community.

“At its heart, Ford House has always been a home, a place of connection between people, nature, and beauty. Eleanor Ford gifted this estate to the community with the hope that it would enrich the lives of future generations. That sense of welcome is especially meaningful at Christmastime, when families gather, lights glow, and the season fills the estate with comfort and joy.”

After exploring the Main Residence, guests can choose one of two festive experiences. The first is Mistletoe Market, located in the historic Drying Yard, where guests can gather around fire pits, enjoy holiday snacks and beverages—including adult beverages—from the Concessions Tent, and shop for unique gifts at The Shop’s Pop-Up, featuring items available only during the event. Alternatively, guests looking for that extra moment of Christmas magic can stop by Santa’s Candy & Sweets Shoppe, a bright and whimsical corner of the Main Residence, for a brief meet and greet and photo opportunity with Santa before exiting to the market.

Every paid ticket includes a complimentary cup of hot cocoa, the perfect companion for a winter stroll. Adults can also purchase a shot to add to their cocoa for a cozy, spirited twist.

Working with Detroit Goodfellows

Ford House is also proud to partner with the Detroit Goodfellows to help brighten the holidays for local children. Toy collection boxes will be in the Visitor Center Lobby and the Administration Building from November 1 through December 10.

Ford House’s Largest-Ever Harvest Day Brings Fall Family Fun, Wetland Boardwalk Opening, and Community Giving to Grosse Pointe Shores Sept. 27 https://fordhouse.org/news/harvest-day-at-ford-house-returns-2025/ Tue, 16 Sep 2025 14:19:39 +0000 https://fordhouse.org/?post_type=news&p=15054

Harvest, Habitat, and Heartwarming Moments

Ford House is celebrating the fall season with its biggest and most meaningful Harvest Day yet on Saturday, Sept. 27, from 12 to 5 p.m.

The annual family event returns with 60 local vendors, pony rides, hands-on activities, and the grand opening of Ford House’s new wetland boardwalk. Guests are also encouraged to give back to the community through a special food drive supporting Just A Little Help of Michigan, a local initiative led by Harper Woods Mayor Valerie Kindle.

Families looking for a joyful way to spend the day together will find plenty to do and discover. Children can meet animals at the petting zoo, ride ponies, get their faces painted, and enjoy lawn games. Adults will find a curated shopping experience across the estate’s open-air market, featuring handcrafted goods, local produce, early holiday gifts, and fall décor from more than 60 independent makers and small businesses.

Guests will also be among the first to experience Ford House’s new wetland boardwalk, officially opening to the public at the event. The elevated wooden pathway winds through native wetlands, linking the Visitor Center parking area to the Tribute Garden and Butterfly House. The trail invites guests to slow down and engage with the natural environment through a peaceful and educational walk. The wetland boardwalk was federally funded through a Transformational Habitat Restoration and Coastal Resilience Grant under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. Funding was received from the NOAA Restoration Center.

The boardwalk will also serve as a key feature in Ford House’s educational programming, allowing students to investigate wetland ecology firsthand and understand the critical role wetlands play in sustaining the Great Lakes ecosystem. The project reflects Ford House’s continued work to be not only a tribute to the past, but a leader in sustainability and environmental engagement across the region.

In the spirit of community support, guests are also encouraged to bring a non-perishable food item to donate to Just A Little Help of Michigan, a food bank and community resource initiative founded by Mayor Valerie Kindle of Harper Woods. Donation bins will be available at the event entrance.

At Ford House, we believe that meaningful experiences happen when people feel connected—to each other, to nature, and to the place they’re in. Harvest Day brings families together through joy, discovery, and play, and now with the opening of our new wetland boardwalk, we’re also inviting guests to see the environment around them with fresh eyes. Our hope is that every visitor leaves not just with memories, but with a deeper appreciation for the natural world—and a shared responsibility to protect it.

Meet the Chef: Ray Zaidan https://fordhouse.org/news/meet-the-chef-ray-zaidan/ Wed, 30 Jul 2025 20:29:28 +0000 https://fordhouse.org/?post_type=news&p=13667

Meet the Chef: Ray Zaidan
Executive Event Chef at The Continental, Ford House

Chef Ray brings heart, heritage, and serious flavor to every dish. We asked him a few questions to get to know the story behind the chef’s coat—and his answers are just as soulful as his food.

What was the first thing you ever made in the kitchen?
“Instant ramen noodles. I came to Canada as a young child, and cooking quickly became both a necessity and a comfort. I learned early that you could take something humble—like a packet of ramen—and completely transform it. A little garlic, a squeeze of lemon, maybe some leftover chicken—it was my first lesson in creativity, survival, and flavor.”

What made you fall in love with cooking?
“Growing up, I carried a lot of responsibility, including helping to raise my younger sibling. Cooking was a way to take care of others—to provide joy, warmth, and comfort when life wasn’t always easy. I found purpose in the way a simple meal could shift someone’s day. Cooking gave me power, and eventually, it gave me a voice.”

What do you love most about working at The Continental?
“Being part of a team that shares my values: hard work, care, and pride in every detail. Continental and the Ford House is more than a workplace—it’s a place where I can align my personal story with a collective mission.”

What’s something you always keep in your fridge?
“Pickles. It’s a weird comfort food for me and I love it.”

What’s the one kitchen tool you can’t live without?
“My chef’s knife. It’s not just a tool—it’s a symbol of how far I’ve come. It’s the one thing I take with me everywhere.”

What’s your late-night guilty pleasure?
“McDonald’s double cheeseburger, no pickles, extra onions. It’s simple, fast, and for some reason, it just hits right.”

What’s your favorite dish on The Continental menu right now?
“The braised short rib sandwich stands out. It’s bold, rich, and full of soul—just like good food should be.”

If your cooking had a theme song, what would it be?
“Time (You and I) by Khruangbin. It’s mellow, rhythmic, and layered—like the meals I love to create. When I need to bring the energy up before service, Be Above It by Tame Impala gets me in the zone.”

Why should people come dine with you?
“Because I bring my story to every plate. I’ve walked a long road, and I try to bring that warmth, humor, and heart into the experience. There’s always something to laugh about, a memory to share, and a dish to connect over. Come dine with me any time.”

If you weren’t in the kitchen, where would you be?
“As a kid, I dreamed of being a pilot. I guess I’ve always wanted to take people places. Cooking does that for me now—just in a different way.”

What do you hope people feel after that first bite?
“I hope it feels like a warm hug. I want them to feel cared for, as if someone thought of them personally while preparing that dish. And I want that last bite to feel like a fond farewell—until next time.”

Come experience Chef Ray’s talent! Book a private event HERE.

Laying the Groundwork (Above Ground): Our Elevated Wetland Boardwalk Is on the Way https://fordhouse.org/news/laying-the-groundwork-above-ground-our-elevated-wetland-boardwalk-is-on-the-way/ Sat, 28 Jun 2025 11:55:36 +0000 https://fordhouse.org/?post_type=news&p=12391

Work is officially underway on a beautiful and impactful new feature at Ford House: an elevated boardwalk that will wind through the wooded wetland near our Visitor Center. While it’s just one part of our ambitious multi-year Shoreline Restoration Project, this new experience will offer big benefits for both our visitors and the environment.

Guests of all ages can explore the wetlands like never before, gaining a deeper connection to nature in all seasons. For our Education department, the boardwalk will also serve as a dynamic outdoor classroom where students can explore the ecology of wetlands and learn how humans can support and sustain natural habitats.

Construction progress on an elevated boardwalk through the wooded wetland near Ford House's Visitor Center, with black support beams and pink construction markers rising from muddy ground and reflective water, surrounded by tall trees and lush greenery.
Crews are installing the elevated boardwalk that will wind through the wooded wetland near our Visitor Center—part of Ford House’s Shoreline Restoration Project. This scenic path will welcome guests into nature while also serving as an outdoor classroom for students learning about environmental sustainability and wetland ecology.

Restoring the Shoreline, Reviving the Ecosystem

Ford House’s Shoreline Restoration Project is a long-term initiative focused on reviving the shoreline and its neighboring habitats to ensure a sustainable environment for the future. These efforts help us create a stronger, more resilient ecosystem where native plants and animals can thrive, improving stormwater management and filtering runoff before it reaches Lake St. Clair.

The boardwalk is being constructed with this restoration mission in mind. It provides a low-impact way for people to experience the wetlands up close, without disrupting the fragile systems that make them so essential to the health of our region.

Education in Action

Once complete, the boardwalk will become a cornerstone of Ford House’s education programs. It offers an ideal setting for school groups, nature camps, and community programs to explore topics like biodiversity, conservation, and climate resilience.

Students can see, hear, and feel the rhythms of a real wetland, from the rustling reeds to the darting frogs to the hum of pollinators. These immersive experiences spark curiosity and leave lasting impressions, helping a new generation understand the importance of protecting and restoring natural spaces.

Ecological Integrity at the Forefront

As with every step of the Shoreline Restoration Project, this work has been guided by care and science. Only trees that were already dead or in the process of dying were removed to clear the boardwalk path. In their place, we will plant more native trees and plants than were removed, enhancing the diversity and long-term health of the wooded wetland.

Over time, this restored habitat will help support the full range of native species—from birds and insects to amphibians and aquatic life—ensuring a rich, functioning ecosystem for years to come.

What's Ahead

Construction is underway now, and the boardwalk is expected to open later this year. Once complete, it will invite guests into a new kind of Ford House experience—one that’s peaceful, immersive, and deeply connected to the natural world.

Stay tuned as we share progress photos, behind-the-scenes updates, and educational insights from our team and partners. We can’t wait to welcome you to this beautiful new path through the wild.

Be Part of the Journey

This boardwalk is one of many ways we’re working to create a sustainable future at Ford House—one rooted in restoration, learning, and responsible stewardship. Follow along for updates, and consider visiting soon to experience the transformation firsthand.

Preserving the Legacy: Tree Care at Ford House This Winter https://fordhouse.org/news/preserving-the-legacy-tree-care-at-ford-house-this-winter/ Mon, 04 Nov 2024 17:37:19 +0000 https://www.fordhouse.org/?post_type=news&p=5905 At Ford House, we know how much our community values the lush, mature trees that make our grounds so special. These trees not only provide natural beauty but are integral to the historic landscape that Eleanor and Edsel Ford envisioned. To keep this vision alive, we continually monitor the health of our trees and take careful action when necessary.

This winter, we’ll focus on a significant tree care project as we remove several trees impacted by Dutch Elm disease. Dutch Elm is a fungal disease spread by beetles that has devastated elm populations across North America. Infected trees can quickly die off, posing risks to other trees and overall landscape health. With our own elms succumbing to this disease, we have decided to remove the affected trees to prevent further spread and ensure the safety of our grounds.

Timing is important in this process. To minimize soil compaction and disruption to the landscape, we’ll wait until the ground is frozen to begin tree removal. This thoughtful timing helps us protect the surrounding vegetation and maintain the integrity of the grounds. Frozen ground allows us to safely bring in the necessary equipment without causing undue stress on the landscape—a priority for our dedicated Landscape team.

The work doesn’t end with the removal of these trees. In alignment with our commitment to preservation and historical accuracy, we’re taking this opportunity to restore the landscape carefully. For each tree removed, we’ll be planting a new tree in its place, selected specifically to reflect the types of trees that would have originally been on the property. This restoration includes species such as American elms and other varieties historically found at Ford House. We’re not simply planting new trees—we’re restoring the natural beauty that the Fords originally enjoyed, recreating an authentic look and feel for future generations.

This project reflects Ford House’s broader mission of preserving our historic buildings and gardens and the landscape itself. These trees are part of Ford House’s legacy and, like all elements of our historic site, require thoughtful care. By taking proactive measures, we ensure that our landscape remains vibrant, safe, and historically accurate.

We understand that tree removal can be concerning, and we want to be fully transparent with our community. Our goal is to create as little disruption as possible while protecting the health and beauty of our grounds. This work is necessary, but it’s also a vital opportunity to bring renewed life to the estate’s landscape by planting young trees that will flourish for years to come.

When you visit Ford House this winter or in the coming spring, you may notice the new plantings beginning to take root. Over time, these trees will grow to create a lush, thriving canopy that respects the estate’s history while contributing to its future. We appreciate your understanding and support in this important work, as together, we continue to honor the beauty and legacy of Ford House.

Thank you for being part of this journey. Every step we take helps to preserve Ford House’s story and its connection to the natural world, ensuring that its beauty endures for generations to come. 🌿
