Something to Do While You’re Waiting

As we waited in vain on Monday for the solar eclipse, I fed walnuts to my squirrels.

Cute little critter
Licking her prize
Searching through the grass
I can smell it.
There it is!
My white squirrel friend has arrived
So cute
That’s a good one
Thank you

Eclipse Day Photos

From one of our local TV Station weathermen: “For those in WNY, did you notice the gravity waves within the clouds? Undulations that looked like a wave on the water. It made for quite the view from the roof at our station.”

First off, we had 99% cloud cover here yesterday in Rochester, NY. Once we got over the disappointment of not being able to actually SEE the moon cover the sun during the eclipse, I started to notice the clouds. The clouds were some of the most incredible I think I’ve ever seen. They had such definition and shape. I know now it was the gravity waves mentioned above that was causing this beautiful show.

Just the beginning of my noticing the clouds – 2:55 p.m.
Getting darker and better defined – 2:57 p.m.
3:04 p.m.
3:05 p.m.
3:07 p.m.
3:08 p.m.
3:10 p.m.
3:11 p.m.
3:12 p.m.
It was definitely getting darker. The streetlight came on down at the corner at 3:19 p.m.
3:19 p.m.

And, here I would upload a short video showing how it looked here at full darkness at 3:20 p.m., but WordPress will not allow me to upload my video from my iPhone without paying an additional $68 so you’ll have to imagine how awesome it was at full dark in the middle of the afternoon. It got really COLD quickly. The birds and the squirrels all disappeared (went home to bed).

The sky to the east at 3:20 p.m.
The sky to the west at 3:23 p.m. when the sun is already making its reappearance.

All in all, even with the lack of being able to see the sun and the moon, it was a sight to behold. Most of my neighbors were outside experiencing it. It was beautiful.
