Exhibitions

Ford House features four unique exhibition spaces, each offering a different lens into the Ford family’s legacy, from personal stories to innovation in design and travel. Exhibitions are included with admission and are located throughout the estate.

Three of Ford House’s exhibitions are located inside the Visitor Center, where guests can explore rotating and permanent galleries in a modern, museum-style setting. The fourth exhibition, Driven by Design+, is housed in the Garage at the Main Gate — a unique space that brings automotive history to life in the original Gate Lodge garage. Together, these four spaces offer visitors a rich and varied look into the Ford family’s world of art, travel, innovation, and design.

  • The Ford Family Story (Visitor Center – Permanent Gallery)
This immersive exhibition explores the lives and legacy of Edsel and Eleanor Ford. Through personal artifacts, photographs, film clips, and interactive displays, guests can discover how the Fords shaped art, design, and the community around them.

  • Wish You Were Here: Unpacking Ford Family Travel (Visitor Center – Gaukler Pointe Gallery)
Step into the world of early 20th-century travel as experienced by the Ford family. This feature exhibition showcases vintage postcards, souvenirs, photographs, and immersive vignettes drawn from Edsel and Eleanor’s journeys between 1915 and 1936.

  • Teague Community Gallery (Visitor Center – Outside the Jensen/Kahn Classrooms)
This intimate gallery space hosts a regularly rotating series of exhibitions, often featuring the work of local artists, partner institutions, and community storytellers. New shows are presented throughout the year, offering something fresh with each visit.

  • Driven by Design+ (Garage at the Main Gate)
Located in the Gate Lodge’s historic garage, this exhibition celebrates Edsel Ford’s influence on American automotive design. Highlights include Eleanor Ford’s 1952 Lincoln Town Car and the prototype that launched the Lincoln Continental legacy — all housed in the very space where the family once parked their cars.

Group Tours & Experiences

Historic Home and Grounds

The Main Residence at Ford House is approximately 30,000 square feet, making it spacious yet intimate by the standards of early 20th-century estate homes. It was designed to reflect both elegance and everyday family living.

The house has four levels:

  • Two main floors are regularly interpreted for tours.

  • The basement and third floor are only accessible on select guided experiences, such as the Nooks & Crannies Guided Tour.

The house was designed by famed architect Albert Kahn, and the landscape architecture was created by Jens Jensen. Kahn was a close collaborator with Edsel Ford and was known for his refined yet functional designs.

Construction of the house began in 1926 and was completed in 1928. The Fords moved in shortly after and used it as their primary residence until Eleanor’s passing in 1976.

Some tours are self-paced, while others are guided. Please refer to your ticket type or check the tour listing on the website for details.

Book your self-paced House + Grounds Admission to enjoy the grounds, gardens, and the main residence.

Book a guided tour for a more engaging experience with an expert guide.

Most garden areas remain open year-round, though some seasonal closures or limited access may occur in winter or during private events.

Strollers are not permitted inside the house due to narrow walkways and preservation efforts. Large bags may be subject to inspection and should be left in your vehicle when possible.

For the preservation of Ford House’s historic interiors, collections, and furnishings, food and beverages are not permitted inside the Main Residence or any other historic buildings. This policy helps protect delicate materials from spills, stains, and pests, ensuring these spaces can be enjoyed for generations to come.

Historic Preservation

Historic preservation is the practice of protecting, maintaining, and repairing historic structures to ensure they remain safe, stable, and true to their original character. At Ford House, this includes visible features like masonry, roofing, and architectural finishes — as well as the behind-the-scenes systems that guests rarely see, such as plumbing, drainage, heating, and electrical infrastructure.

It’s not just about keeping things beautiful — it’s about doing the quiet, foundational work that allows this National Historic Landmark to endure for generations to come.

Preservation work is guided by historic documentation, expert consultation, and national preservation standards. The goal is to maintain authenticity while ensuring long-term stewardship of the estate. Projects are carefully prioritized based on need, significance, and available resources.

While some updates have been made to support visitor access and preservation efforts, the house remains largely intact and reflects the family’s style and daily life. Wherever possible, original materials and layouts have been preserved or restored.

Landscapes

The estate’s landscape was designed by famed Prairie School landscape architect Jens Jensen, known for his naturalistic approach and use of native plants. His vision for Ford House emphasized harmony between the built and natural environment.

Today, that legacy is carried forward by a team of talented and educated landscape professionals, including horticulturists, rosarians, and sustainability experts, who work together to maintain the estate’s beauty, restore key areas to their historic condition, and ensure the grounds continue to reflect Ford House’s character as a family home.

Guests can stroll through a variety of landscape features, including the Formal Garden, Rose Garden, Lagoon, Meadow, and naturalistic woodlands. Each area reflects a different aspect of Jensen’s design and the Fords’ love of nature.

Yes. Spring and summer bring vibrant displays to the Formal and Rose Gardens, while fall transforms the estate with brilliant foliage. Seasonal highlights vary, so no two visits are exactly the same.

Yes. In keeping with Jensen’s philosophy and our sustainability goals, the landscape team prioritizes native plantings, pollinator habitats, and sustainable land care techniques throughout the estate.

Material Culture

IRS regulations prohibit Ford House staff from offering value appraisals of any kind, including authentication of art, artifacts, and documents. To find a list of appraisers, visit the American Society of Appraisers and/or the Appraisers Association of America.

Pets and Service Animals

Pets are not permitted on the property, except for trained service animals as defined by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Under the ADA, a service animal is a dog that is individually trained to do work or perform tasks for the benefit of an individual with a disability. The tasks performed must be directly related to the person’s disability. Emotional support, comfort, or companionship animals do not qualify as service animals under the ADA.

However, Friends of Ford House enjoy the exclusive benefit of being able to walk their leashed dogs on the estate grounds during regular operating hours (some restrictions may apply during special events).

If you’d love to explore Ford House with your four-legged friend, consider joining as a Friend of Ford House to enjoy this and other great benefits.

Yes! Moss, our beloved Director of Wildlife Management, is a trained border collie who helps keep geese off the grounds. You may spot him at work during your visit.
