Wetland Boardwalk

Honoring Eleanor Ford’s vision of beauty and preservation

Walk Among the Wetlands

The Wetland Boardwalk is Ford House’s newest outdoor experience, a little more than 400 feet long, guiding guests through restored wetlands along the Lake St. Clair shoreline.

This elevated pathway lets visitors explore the estate’s natural habitat up close while protecting fragile ecosystems beneath.

Located just beyond the Visitor Center gardens, the boardwalk is clearly marked on the Ford House estate map.

Why a Wetland Boardwalk?

Ford House built the Wetland Boardwalk as part of its larger Shoreline Restoration Project, a multi-year initiative to protect and revitalize the estate’s Lake St. Clair waterfront.

  • Environmental Stewardship: Wetlands are natural filters that improve water quality, provide flood protection, and serve as essential habitats for birds, fish, and amphibians.
  • Restoration Efforts: The project included planting more than 15,000 native perennials and 500 trees and shrubs, ensuring healthy ground cover and biodiversity.
  • Legacy of Care: The boardwalk reflects Eleanor Ford’s vision of preserving the estate for future generations — blending history, beauty, and ecological responsibility.
  • Education & Community Impact: Beyond recreation, the boardwalk serves as a living classroom for K–12 programs, helping students and families understand the importance of protecting natural environments.
