Visitor Center

The Visitor Center is a new way to experience Ford House

Come experience the first major expansion of the estate in over 90 years — the stunning Ford House Visitor Center, a 40,000 square-foot addition paired with a new 17,000 square-foot Administration Building. These innovative spaces opened to the public in May 2021, transforming how guests engage with the historic estate.

The Ford House Visitor Center is home to The Continental, our award-winning restaurant offering lakeside dining with seasonally inspired menus, and The Shop at Ford House, a carefully curated boutique filled with unique gifts, books, home décor, and locally made items.

Inside the Visitor Center, you’ll also find a robust suite of exhibition galleries. Our permanent exhibition, The Ford Family Story, is open year-round and explores the lives, legacy, and impact of Eleanor and Edsel Ford. The Gaukler Pointe Gallery hosts a rotating schedule of curated exhibitions, often featuring design, art, and history topics that complement Ford House’s mission. In addition, the Teague Community Gallery provides space for local artists and partner organizations to present work that reflects the cultural, environmental, and historical themes central to Ford House.

While the Ford family’s legacy remains timeless, the Visitor Center allows Ford House to tell its story in bold new ways — highlighting the lives of Eleanor and Edsel Ford and their contributions to Detroit, design, and American history through interactive and accessible experiences.

Designed with sustainability at its core, the Ford House Visitor Center and Administration Building are net-zero energy-efficient and built to harmonize with the estate’s natural surroundings. These spaces not only enhance the visitor experience but also ensure the long-term preservation, restoration, and stewardship of this National Historic Landmark for generations to come.

Meeting the needs of the 21st century visitor

The new Visitor Center aesthetically reflects the Cotswold style architecture of the historic buildings, incorporating a slate roof, limestone exterior, copper gutters, and other features inspired by the principles of the main residence. In addition, the interiors will draw inspiration from the sleek, rich, contemporary feel of the modern rooms in the Fords’ home, which were designed by Walter Teague in the 1930s.
