Visitor Center

The Visitor Center is a new way to experience Ford House

Come see our first major expansion in over 90 years— a 40,000 square-foot Visitor Center and 17,000 square-foot Administration Building. The new spaces opened in May 2021.

The state-of-the-art Visitor Center brings a new restaurant, four event spaces, exhibition spaces, expanded program offerings, and breathtaking views of Ford Cove.

The Ford family’s legacy will never change, but this expansion project has allowed Ford House to convey the history of one of America and Detroit’s most renowned families in an interactive and immersive style.

The Visitor Center and Administration Building were designed to be net-zero energy-efficient, with great care to emphasize sustainability and the surrounding natural ecosystem. The buildings will enhance the visitor experience and allow the National Historic Landmark estate to plan and pursue long-term restoration and rehabilitation projects.

Meeting the needs of the 21st century visitor

The new Visitor Center aesthetically reflects the Cotswold style architecture of the historic buildings, incorporating a slate roof, limestone exterior, copper gutters, and other features inspired by the principles of the main residence. In addition, the interiors will draw inspiration from the sleek, rich, contemporary feel of the modern rooms in the Fords’ home, which were designed by Walter Teague in the 1930s.

A unique, welcoming lobby allowing guests an easy connection to Ford House activities.

A dedicated education wing with two multi-functional rooms and outdoor classroom space.

Exhibition space specifically for traveling and changing exhibits

A new exhibition gallery telling the Ford Family Story.

A new special event space with glass walls overlooking Ford Cove, available for private and corporate rentals.

Expanded retail space with merchandise reflecting the art, architecture, and landscape of the estate, as well as the special rotating exhibits.
